Canon eos r vs sony a7s

25.10.2020 By Molabar

For the past couple of years, Canon has often been criticised for lacking innovation. InCanon unveiled a more serious competitor on the mirrorless and full-frame market: the EOS R. The EOS R joins a segment where the competition is stronger than ever. Not only does it have to face the growing popularity of the Sony E-mount system, to which Canon has already lost market shares, but it also has to contend with new full-frame mirrorless systems from the likes of Nikon and Panasonic.

In terms of weight, both cameras feel the same when held in the hand, but the EOS R is visibly larger thanks to its extra height and the bigger front grip. They are weather-sealed against dust and moisture, and feature a robust construction with a magnesium alloy chassis. Speaking of the grip, the EOS R is more comfortable to hold with larger lenses.

There is a bit more space between the grip and the lens mount.

Canon EOS R vs Sony A7 III – The complete comparison

Note that a grip extender for the A7 III can improve the handling check our accessories article to find out more. The Canon has an additional 2. Ease of use is one of the main aspects that sets these two cameras apart. The way you operate them is quite different on many levels, starting with the quality of the control interface.

I also prefer where Canon has placed them, especially the one located on top of the grip rather than on front, as I find it more comfortable to reach. One small complaint here is that the Mode button is difficult to reach with your fingers when composing with the EVF. There is a dedicated dial on the top left part of the EOS R body, whereas the Sony has it around the shutter release button. It allows you to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO automatically or manually with different combinations, including exposure compensation.

Think about the classic P mode Program but in this case you can make exposure fully auto, semi-auto or fully manual at any time without switching shooting modes. Everything is controlled with the two main dials and once you get used to it, making changes becomes almost instantaneous. That being said, those who often need to switch between a combination of auto and manual exposure settings might find the Fv mode very interesting. The EOS R5 seems to be highly regarded as a stills camera.

In particular, the EOS R5 autofocus system seems to be huge leap forwards. My opinion s about the EOS R5 overheating hysteria is listed here. This post might contain affiliate links. The other is a do-it-all hybrid camera. The EOS R5 is a remarkable piece of equipment, but also demonstrates the benefits of a narrower focus. The Canon EOS R5 can only video shoot for a limited time at its highest quality settings, before needing to cool down.

But what if you want to shoot a more varying mix of stills and video?

Here the decision is a bit trickier, which is why we've compiled this in-depth comparison between the two cameras to help you decide. Which costs more? They can also use SD cards. This is no great surprise when Sony full-frame cameras are known for their relatively trim proportions. Their approaches to top plate controls are a little different, though. The Canon EOS R5 has a classic monochrome display up top alongside a couple of context-sensitive rotary controls. Canon and Sony choose to spend the display budget differently too.

That would be high for a tablet display, let alone an EVF. Look at those pixel figures and it may seem less of a huge resolution disparity, but the Sony does have the sharpest EVF you can get in Whether or not you need the Sony's extra resolution is another matter — it doesn't refresh any quicker than the EOS R5's EVF, so it's mainly extra detail you're getting.

Things switch around when you look at the rear screens. Both screens have vari-angle hinges, a big benefit for all the YouTubers and content creators out there. The number of focus points matters much less than in a traditional DSLR phase-detection autofocus system, mostly because there are stacks of them these days.

How about autofocus tracking? You now have very granular control over the AF speed and responsiveness in video, along with Sony's incredibly tenacious touch-tracking. Both cameras also claim to focus down to -6EV, which is an impressive feat for the Canon given it has a much higher-resolution sensor. The Canon has a resolution of Below is an overview of the main specs of the two cameras as a starting point for the comparison.

Which one should you buy? Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their body size, their imaging sensors, their shooting features, their input-output connections, and their reception by expert reviewers. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are available. All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter.

If the front view area width x height of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony A7S is notably larger 6 percent than the Canon RP. The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Hence, you might want to study and compare the specifications of available lenses in order to get the full picture of the size and weight of the two camera systems.

The battery packs of both cameras can be charged via USBwhich can be very convenient when travelling. The following table provides a synthesis of the main physical specifications of the two cameras and other similar ones. If you would like to visualize and compare a different camera combination, just use the right or left arrows in the table to switch to the respective camera.

Alternatively, you can also navigate to the CAM-parator app and make your selection from the full list of cameras there. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market. The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic rangeand richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background.

On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses. Both cameras under consideration feature a full frame sensorbut their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the A7S is 1 percent smaller. And while it may be a year old, the S1H still holds some advantages over the other two.

Jumping right off the spec sheets is the difference in resolution. The S1H splits the difference and can shoot 6K footage technically, 5. While the EOS R5 wins for sharpness as the only camera that can do 8K, shooting at such a resolution is impractical for most people due to the large files it creates and the fact that the camera will quickly overheat in this mode. While it can also shoot perfectly oversampled 4K footage processed from 8K, the R5 still overheats easily while doing so.

The Panasonic S1H is in the goldilocks position when it comes to resolution, and offers even more aspect ratio choices than the EOS R5. It can shoot 6K5.

It also has a number of anamorphic modes available from a cropped, super 35 region of the sensor. However, it loses when it comes to frame rates. It can shoot 4K at 60 fps, but only in crop mode. All three can record in bit color with flat log profiles suitable for color grading.

Each also offers the option for all intra-frame All-I compression, which treats each individual frame like a still image rather than relying on leading and trailing frames to help with the compression. All-I is preferred by editors as it is easiest to work with on a computer, but it does require higher bitrates to achieve the same level of quality as standard inter-frame compression.

But does this mean the S1H will outshoot the Sony at 24 or 30p? This would require a side-by-side comparison to tell for sure, but the S1H has more data to work with at these frame rates.

This means working with RAW on the R5 may be impractical, and even problematic as you will run into the heat limits, something an external recorder would have at least helped with. Additionally, the uncompressed RAW video is going to really tax your edit machine, furthering the argument that 8K on the Canon is impractical for a majority of cases.

That might sound like a striking difference, but keep in mind that footage from both cameras will be recorded as bit Apple ProRes RAW, so the difference may not be that visible in practical use cases. The S1H can also output its full-width 5. The EOS R5 is in the middle at 1.

It incorporates a vented cooling compartment with a fan between the sensor and the LCD monitor. All those overheating problems with the Canon? The Sony does not have a top LCD. All three cameras have excellent electronic viewfinders, but the Sony does win here with its 9.

The S1H and R5 share a 5. All three cameras offer dual memory card slots, but each does so differently. CFexpress Type A cards are smaller than the Type B variant and physically similar enough to SD cards that Sony was able to design a slot that accepts both media types.

Sony has long been a leader when it comes to mirrorless focusing systems, but Canon has caught up with the EOS R5.

Both feature on-chip phase-detectionan advantage over the contrast-detection-only autofocus in the Panasonic S1H. It uses a technology called Depth from Defocus, which takes known blur characteristics about the attached lens to inform the camera about how much an object is out of focus and in what direction, similar to phase-detection. While this system can be very fast, it tends to cause problems in continuous autofocus situations as it has to constantly sample the focus at slightly different points to provide the data it needs to operate.

As for stabilization, all three cameras feature 5-axis sensor-shift systems that work in conjunction with compatible stabilized lenses for even better performance.

Canon EOS R5 vs. Sony A7S III vs. Panasonic S1H: Best full-frame for video?

All three will offer a noticeable advantage here over non-stabilized cameras. In a video camera, audio is often as important as the video itself. The Sony also allows for four discrete audio channels to be recorded in-camera, something rarely seen outside of the cinema camera world. The Sony certainly looks like the loser here, but depending on your needs, 12MP may be plenty. When it comes to prints, however, the EOS R5 will definitely have an edge.Kirk, United States Iceland Full Circle, May 2015 Our trip with Nordic Visitor exceeded our expectations and I doubt we would have been able to book a comparable trip on our own.
